Support Bulletins

NTP Vulnerabilities Prior to Version 4.2.8p9

Several medium, medium/low and low severity vulnerabilities were recently reported in ntpd currently used in application software version 5.4.5 or below. We expect to update to 4.2.8p9 in the next release.

Leap Second Compliance Testing

Recent testing confirms proper handling of the leap second event at UTC midnight on December 31, 2016. We tested combinations of application software, GPS receivers and firmware and several timing protocols

Impact of the "Dirty COW" Vulnerability (CVE-2016-5195)

This Linux vulnerability can only be exploited if an attacker is able to successfully authenticate with the product and gain shell access. We expect to eliminate the vulnerability in a future release.

Required Update for Serial Numbers from 05006-11719 Manufactured between Nov 2013 and March 2016 Running Versions Before v5.4.5

This update permanently fixes the leap second bug of July 2016 affecting these units.

Required Update for Units 9400 Running v5.0.2

We strongly suggest updating all units running 5.0.2 to the latest version of software due to a memory usage bug which will eventually effect normal operation. Contact tech support if you cannot update your unit from version 5.0.2.

White Papers

More Info
Typically, applications for timing use GPS as a precise, traceable, high availability, and free source of synchronization. But GPS is not the only satellite in the sky. More and more Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are being developed and deployed. This white paper describes the trend to multi-GNSS using the example of the Russian GLONASS system as a complement to GPS.

NTP (Network Time Protocol) and SNTP (Simple Network Time Protocol) are very similar TCP/IP protocols in that they use the same time packet from a Time Server message to compute accurate time. The procedure used by the Time Server to assemble and send out a time stamp is exactly the same whether NTP (i.e. full implementation NTP) is being used, or if SNTP is being used.

Spectracom NTP services, implemented in its SecureSync and NetClock 9400 platforms, are compatible with an Anycast routing scheme. The NTP over Anycast feature is a combination of the time server’s ability to associate one of its network ports to an Anycast IP address and to remove itself as an available time source if there is a problem with its reference.

Large-scale NTP deployments require consideration for the network’s time synchronization architecture. Network time deployments are usually driven by considerations for reliability, scalability, manageability and security. The capability of modern NTP servers, such as Spectracom SecureSync® and NetClock® time servers, is such that capacity does not impact the design of the synchronization architecture.
